SCW Secretary General highlights HRH Princess Sabeeka Global Award at UN Event

Lulwa Saleh Al Awadhi, Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), led a side event organised by the Kingdom of Bahrain, in cooperation with UN Women, to promote the third edition of the HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa Global Award for Women’s Empowerment. The event was held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly at UN Women headquarters in New York, marking the launch of applications for participation.

Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa Global Award for Women’s Empowerment is a leading initiative launched by the Kingdom of Bahrain and is directed to government ministries, official institutions, private sector entities, civil society organisations, and individuals worldwide, to encourage efforts aimed at empowering women.

 

Al Awadhi highlighted Bahrain’s commitment to adopting rigorous and scientifically grounded methodologies for the award, in line with international standards, through the selection of a jury panel comprised of experts with recognised contributions at the regional and global levels in the field of women’s empowerment and advancement. She extended her sincere appreciation to the jury members for their dedication to overseeing the award process in line with its participation criteria and conditions.

 

The Secretary General expressed confidence that the third edition of this global award will continue to contribute to highlighting and recognising outstanding initiatives and efforts aimed at empowering women and girls across the world, and will honour new achievements that can serve as models to be shared and built upon at various levels.

 

The event featured a detailed presentation on the award’s objectives, criteria, and mechanisms for participation, followed by a promotional film showcasing its journey since its inception in 2017.

 

Dr. Moez Doraid, Acting Regional Director for the Arab States at UN Women, also addressed the event. He commended the solid partnership between UN Women and the Supreme Council for Women in supporting and empowering women, commending the leading role of HRH the Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa’s Award in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and its tangible positive impact on previous winners from around the world.

 

He further noted Bahrain’s election to the Executive Board of UN Women for the 2026–2028 term, highlighting the importance of this membership in shaping the organisation’s strategies and work plans for the coming phase.

 

Dr. Doraid also referred to the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting marking the 30th anniversary of the 4th World Conference on Women (Beijing+30), lauding Bahrain’s initiatives presented during the session.

 

He highlighted the award’s achievements at the national level, as well as successes recorded by winners of the second edition from countries including Nigeria, Uganda, Egypt, and Brazil.

 

In conclusion, he called on all stakeholders to participate in the award’s four categories, stressing the importance of continuing efforts to empower women and advance their progress.
