Under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Consort of His Majesty the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), Lieutenant General Dr. Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Health (SCH) and President of the Bahrain Diabetes Society, inaugurated the Bahrain Diabetes and Obesity Conference (BDOC).

Dr. Jaleela bint Al Sayed Jawad Hasan, Minister of Health, and Lulwa Saleh Al Awadhi, SCW Secretary General, alongside senior officials and medical professionals, were present.

 

The event, organised by the Bahrain Diabetes Society in collaboration with Education Plus, is taking place on November 20-21, with the participation of officials and medical professionals.

 

Dr. Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdullah expressed appreciation to HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim for her dedication to advancing the healthcare sector in Bahrain, particularly in improving women’s health and quality of life. He highlighted the SCW’s role in fostering an environment that empowers women to realise their potential and contribute effectively across all fields, including healthcare.

 

The SCH Chairman noted that the conference reflects the ongoing support Bahraini women receive under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. He emphasised the importance of addressing diabetes and obesity to secure a brighter future for women’s health, positively impacting the broader community.

 

Highlighting women’s important contributions to the healthcare sector, Dr. Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdullah pointed out that women form a substantial part of the workforce in the field, achieving national objectives with competence and impacting institutional performance, gender balance, and equality of opportunity.

 

The opening ceremony featured a film on women and diabetes, showcasing Bahrain’s efforts in supporting women’s health. Additionally, a book focusing on diabetes during pregnancy was launched.

 

The opening also included recorded speeches by Dr. Hanan Balkhy, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean; Professor Peter Schwarz, Director General of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF); and Dr. Mohamed Sandid, Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa for Diabetes.

 

The Bahrain Diabetes Society presented a token of appreciation to HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim, received by Lulwa Saleh Al Awadhi, SCW Secretary General. Supporting organisations and partners were also honoured during the opening ceremony.

 

The conference features lectures on women’s health, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular health, mental health, and other key topics, alongside various workshops.
